Everyone wants to get things without having to work for it. Case in point - Insurance fraud. One of the biggest problems in our economy (until the recent 'sub-prime' mortgage fiasco) is the magnitude of the insurance fraud. People are lying, cheating and doing all sorts of shenanigans to get money from insurance companies that they don't deserve. Auto insurance is incredibly rife with fraud as is medical insurance (a hidden cost that congress is trying to keep hidden by not addressing in their current health insurance bills).
A second case is the lottery. The lottery is the worst thing that states can do to their citizens and themselves. It adds a greatly overestimated income in the short-term while reducing long-term income/wealth and increasing social instability and pathologies (i.e. gambling addictions). It is also a tax on the poor and uneducated, since they buy the vast majority of lottery tickets. Yet people are coveting (there's an old term) having lotteries and gambling in every state. Notice that the phrase "when I win the lottery" has become the catch-phrase for getting a lot of money.
One talk radio show host frequently played a sound clip from a women celebrating that now that Barak Obama has been elected president, she'll get a new kitchen! This is the mentality of the poor underclass - the welfare class. Rather then working hard to make money, they want everything to be GIVEN to them. It flies in the face of what had been the country's greatest strength - the Protestant Work Ethic. There is a good reason that western europe and specifically America has been the most prosperous society in history. With no king to confiscate their wealth and the widespread belief that God had ordained that man work for his bread, people CREATED wealth in unimagined amounts (which are still unimaginable to those who believe in Zero-Sum - noone can get wealthy except by stealing other people's wealth.)
Now, the federal government is confiscating more and more of our wealth and President Obama attacks all wealthy people as evil. If this doesn't change quickly, we will soon be headed down the "Road to Serfdom".
