Republicans have a huge albatross around their neck. They will have troubles with a large number of voters until they are willing to take on the legacy of George W Bush and admit that he was one of the worst presidents in our lifetime.
Just like Richard Nixon, he campaigned as a true conservative (unlike his father), but pushed through massive socialist programs. Even ignoring his questionable decision to invade Iraq, his response to 9/11 was more government intrusion into private lives. And his "free-market" policy of tearing down the barrier between commercial and investment banking has to be considered one of the all time worst decisions ever by a president.
The only thing which he *may* have gotten right was in his Supreme Court appointments, but that was only because of a concerted effort by conservatives to thwart his poor personal preferences for nominees. (Harriet Myers? Are you kidding me??) Only time will tell if these appointments are good ones or not.
This is why Obama continues to mine the mother lode that is "It's George Bush's fault!". Because alot of it is.
